Advancing Global Health and Development

A partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Hertz Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have partnered to establish the “Hertz Fellowship in Global Health and Development”, which expands the Hertz Fellowship experience to include two summer internships at the Gates Foundation. The goal is to provide fellows with hands-on opportunities to learn about global health and development issues and inspire them to broaden their contribution to society.

“We started this partnership because both foundations believe in bringing solutions to the wide range of health and development challenges faced by people around the world.”
– Robbee Baker Kosak

Internship Details

The internships take place in the Gates Foundation’s Global Health or Global Development programs beginning the summer following selection. Fellows can participate in the program for two summers with each internship lasting 11 to 12 weeks. The Gates Foundation compensates fellows for their salary and provides support for corporate housing and travel costs during the internship period. Fellows must be at least 18 years old to participate.

Selection Process

The Hertz Fellowship in Global Health and Development is open to Hertz Fellowship applicants who have reached the finalist stage of the application process and all in-school Hertz Fellows, as long as they will return to graduate school after the last summer of their internship. Hertz Fellowship applicants will have an opportunity to express interest once they have been named a finalist. In-school fellows can submit applications to the Hertz Foundation between December and March.

The Hertz Foundation prescreens all interested candidates and recommends fellows to be interviewed by the Gates Foundation. Within four week of the interviews, the Gates Foundation will make final decisions regarding internship offers and notify candidates directly.
