Paul Nielsen

Paul D. Nielson is director and CEO of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

Previously, he served in the U.S. Air Force for 32 years in a variety of roles, including commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory and as the Air Force’s technology executive officer. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Legion of Merit. Paul holds a BS degree in physics and mathematics from the U.S. Air Force Academy and both an MS in applied science and a PhD in plasma physics from the University of California, Davis. He also earned an MBA from the University of New Mexico and graduated from the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC.
