Joe Weening, PhD

Joseph Weening is a Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses Center for Communications Research in La Jolla, California (IDA/CCR-L).

Joe works mainly on applied mathematical and computational problems in support of the U.S. intelligence community.

Joe was an undergraduate mathematics major at Princeton University, and earned his Ph.D. in computer science at Stanford University under Prof. John McCarthy. His thesis topic, “Parallel Execution of Lisp Programs”, combined his interests in symbolic computing, programming languages, and high-performance computing. After working one additional year as a research associate at Stanford, he joined the staff at IDA/CCR-L. During his career there he served as Deputy Director and Information Systems Director for about nine years, and then returned to full-time research.
