Edward Chen’s research focuses on the applications of redox flow batteries for grid-scale renewable energy storage.

Chen hopes to pursue his future interests in investigating the electrochemical properties of various battery electrode and separator materials using equivalent circuit modeling through impedance spectroscopy and coulombic efficiency from charge-discharge performance to develop a real-time electrochemical battery health management system.

He intends to use his expertise in electrochemical energy storage to innovate new technology for microgrid applications with improved integration of renewable energy. His research has taken him to Army bases across the U.S. and the Pentagon to study energy resilience for national security. His favorite accomplishment from his research experience is engineering a flowable electrochemical conductivity cell to study and model the electrochemical properties of alternative separator materials and electrodes for his flow battery research team at West Point. Through this research project, he has developed an AI/ML model to determine the RLC-equivalent circuit from impedance spectroscopy results and published his conductivity results in a study on the microstructure of graphene oxide sheets in suspensions for flowable electrode applications to improve battery performance for electrochemical energy storage.

Chen will graduate from the U.S. Military Academy class of 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, with honors, and a minor in engineering management. At West Point, Chen leads 1,099 cadets as the 1st Regiment command sergeant major and competes on the Army water polo team. He serves as the cadet in charge of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering club and is a Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi member. After graduating in May 2025, Chen will commission as an engineer officer in the U.S. Army and pursue a doctorate in chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Chen loves to golf, fish, work out and explore coffee shops in his spare time.
