James Keener is distinguished professor of Mathematics at the University of Utah, where he is recognized internationally for his work in mathematical biology. Keener earned his undergraduate degree before completing his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, where his fellowship began in 1970. He has devoted his career to developing mathematical models of physiological systems, with particular emphasis on cardiac electrophysiology. His textbook Mathematical Physiology, co-authored with James Sneyd, is the standard reference in the field and has trained generations of mathematical biologists. His models of spiral waves in cardiac tissue have contributed to the understanding of ventricular fibrillation and its treatment.
