Mohammed Islam is professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where his research focuses on fiber optics, nonlinear photonics, and medical diagnostics. Islam earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT, completing his Ph.D. in electrical engineering there, with his fellowship beginning in 1981. His research at the University of Michigan has produced innovations in ultrafast fiber lasers, optical amplifiers, and the development of broadband mid-infrared sources for medical imaging and breath analysis. He is also an entrepreneur who has co-founded several photonics companies commercializing his research.
