Tony Bernhardt is the co-founder at Project 2030.

Project 2030’s goal is to exceed California’s 2030 targets and put California on a path to be carbon neutral by 2045. While Project 2030 is emphasizing efforts for California, the ultimate goal is to work on efforts that are replicable and make economic sense for sub-national, national and international efforts.

Prior to co-founding Project 2030, Tony spent most of his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), serving for a decade as Director of LLNL’s Center for Microelectronics and Optoelectronics. In that position he worked with numerous corporate partners on technology development and earned the Department of Energy Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer. His own research centered on applications of lasers.

During a four year interlude from the Lab, Tony joined a start-up that developed and manufactured advanced laser systems for research. He was on the management committee of the company and served in both marketing and engineering capacities. The company was acquired by a much larger company.

After retiring in 2005, Tony joined E2 to advocate passage of the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32) and he remains involved in achieving its goals.

Tony also serves on the Board of Directors of Resources for the Future and is a member of the Global Leadership Council of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Tony earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from UCLA and a PhD in Applied Science from the University of California at Davis.
