Charles Kim, PhD

MAKING HISTORY

Charles H. Kim was a plasma physicist at UCLA whose doctoral research examined linear wave conversion and parametric instabilities in nonuniform plasmas — phenomena central to the behavior of laser-heated fusion targets. Kim received his Hertz Fellowship in 1971 and earned his doctorate in plasma physics at UCLA, where his dissertation analyzed the conditions under which energy can be transferred from coherent electromagnetic waves to plasma oscillations through nonlinear coupling processes.
