Aryeh Weiss, PhD

Aryeh M. Weiss is an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, where his research focuses on live-cell microscopy, quantitative fluorescence imaging, and the characterization of fluorescent materials. He earned all of his higher degrees at MIT, including four degrees in electrical engineering, before immigrating to Israel in 1987. After arriving in Israel, Weiss joined the Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT), where he worked from 1987 to 2003 and developed deep expertise in microscopy and digital image processing. He joined Bar-Ilan University’s School of Engineering — now the Alexander Kofkin Faculty of Engineering — in 2003. His research centers on biological imaging using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), the development of new microscopy methods, and image analysis techniques that allow researchers to extract quantitative information from living cells. His work bridges electrical engineering principles — particularly signal processing and optics — with the needs of contemporary cell biology and biomedical research. Weiss received his Hertz Fellowship in 1979 and completed his doctoral thesis at MIT on the real-time control of crosslinked polyelectrolyte membranes, work that involved regulating ion transport through responsive polymer materials using electrical signals.
