Hertz Foundation Travel Fund
The Hertz Foundation Travel Fund provides financial support to Hertz Fellows to advance their professional growth through conference travel and interdisciplinary engagement. Awardees receive a lump sum of $2,000 for domestic or $5,000 for international travel.
Supporting professional development
Established in 2025, this funding provides Fellows with critical support to enhance their career and professional development. Funding is designated to support travel to attend technical conferences, interdisciplinary or entrepreneurial convenings and workshops or seminars that catalyze new career paths, research directions or cross-sector collaborations.
Award details
eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following conditions and complete and submit an application to be eligible to receive a travel award:
- Are currently an enrolled & in school Hertz Fellow or completed your PhD studies within the past 10 years
- Plan to attend a professional activity (conference, workshop, convening, etc.) that advances your research or professional development
- The professional event is at least 5 business days in the future from the date of your application and before September 15, 2027 (3 months from the end of the current fiscal year)
- Have not already received this award within the fiscal year (ends June 30 each year) or received separate funding from another source for this professional activity
- Are not applying to fund travel to a Hertz-sponsored event
Important
- Award recipients agree to acknowledge support from the Hertz Foundation in all related materials (e.g., program bio, poster/footer, slides acknowledgement, paper/abstract where permitted, website/social posts), complete a survey after participation and be responsive to related requests from the Foundation in a timely manner.
- Fellows are eligible to receive one award per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) for up to 10 years post-PhD and all eligible applications are approved on a rolling, first-come first-served basis, provided the travel meets eligibility requirements.
- The Travel Fund award is a fixed, flat amount for domestic or international travel and will not be adjusted based on actual costs. If expenditures are lower than the award, you are not required to return the difference and can apply the funds to future professional endeavors. If costs exceed the award, the Foundation will not provide additional funds.
- If you are an eligible Fellow currently residing outside the US, please contact us before applying to confirm which award to apply for (domestic or international).
- To have an award count toward the current fiscal year (ending June 30), applications must be submitted by June 15 and the conference must take place within 3 months (by September 15). Otherwise, applications will be considered for the next fiscal year.

How to apply
All enrolled in-school and early-career Fellows (up to 10 years post-PhD) are eligible to apply. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with decisions received within five business days upon submission and funds disbursed shortly thereafter. Eligible Fellows may request an application below. Current in-school Fellows may also access the application through their fellowship portal.
