John Zayhowski is a Senior Technical Staff Member at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he has spent his career developing advanced solid-state and fiber laser systems. Zayhowski earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT, completing his Ph.D. in electrical engineering there, with his fellowship beginning in 1981. At Lincoln Laboratory, he has been a pioneer in the development of microchip lasers—extremely compact monolithic solid-state lasers that enable new capabilities in ranging, sensing, and communications. His contributions to laser design and nonlinear optical frequency conversion have produced dozens of patents and are deployed in a wide range of photonic systems.
