G. Brian Stephenson is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He has been a staff member at Argonne since joining the Materials Science Division in 1995. At Argonne, Stephenson has been a leading figure in developing and applying synchrotron x-ray techniques to the study of materials synthesis and processing. His most widely cited contributions include establishing the existence of ferroelectricity in ultrathin ferroelectric films, the observation of speckle in coherent x-ray diffraction—enabling x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy—and the development of multilayer Laue lenses for nanoscale x-ray focusing. He received an R&D 100 Award for his work on the Hard X-Ray Nanoprobe beamline at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Stephenson served as director of the Advanced Photon Source from 2011 to 2014, overseeing one of the world’s premier synchrotron X-ray research facilities.
