Joel Miller is a mathematical modeler studying the spread of infectious processes.
Joel is one of very few Hertz Fellows to decline his award – traveling abroad to do a PhD at Cambridge in fluid dynamics, which won a prize from the British Society of Rheology. In a postdoc at Los Alamos, his research switched to studying infectious disease spread, which he continued as an NIH postdoc at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Fogarty Institute as part of the RAPIDD program.
He is now a faculty member at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, with a joint position in mathematics and biology. His work focuses on finding efficient mathematical/computational methods to model the spread of infectious processes. Currently, he is studying HIV, cholera, and dengue, as well as models of behavior spread.
