Tax-Savvy Ways to Support the Hertz Foundation
The end of the calendar year is also when many of us focus on philanthropic decisions. As you consider your contributions, please review these year-end tips and ways you can leverage your Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and other giving vehicles on behalf of the Hertz Foundation and other organizations you support.
supporting the make history campaign
All new gifts to the Hertz Foundation this fall—to the annual Hertz Fund and our other key priorities—will count towards the Make History Campaign.
Thanks to the generosity of the Hertz Community, we are nearly 80% towards our $40 million goal and your support will help us to achieve success so that we may continue to identify and select our nation’s top science and technology talent, provide them with lifelong support as part of our vibrant, multidisciplinary Hertz Community, enhance diverse pathways to STEM leadership, and increase collaboration through our powerful partnership network.
We deeply appreciate your support of the Hertz Foundation and thereby your ” vote” of the importance of growing our nation’s strength and leadership in science and technology.
tax-savvy recommendations
1. Pre-Scheduling and Recurring Grants
You can pre-schedule grants or set up recurring grants within your online DAF portal. These options are an easy way to make the Hertz Foundation a “regular” grantee.
2. Multi-Year Gifts (Pledges)
Pledge payments have been approved by the Internal Revenue Service (Section 4 of IRS Notice 2017-73), as long as the DAF sponsor does not reference the pledge in the grant purpose, check memo, or cover letter.
3. Expendable or Endowed Fellowships
A DAF can fund an expendable (named) or endowed Hertz Fellowship. Remember that if you fund a fellowship, you cannot select the specific recipient, nor can the recipient be a family member.
4. Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
Want to save more taxes? Philanthropic retirees commonly overlook qualified charitable distributions, or QCDs. Rather than counting as an itemized deduction, QCDs may reduce adjusted gross income and can satisfy yearly required minimum distributions. If you’re age 70½ or older, you may use QCDs to donate up to $108,000 per year and transfers at age 73 or older may count as required minimum distributions.
5. An Alternative to a Charitable Remainder Trust
DAFs are easier to establish and just as capable of handling complex gifts. Visit us online to make a DAF gift through DAF Direct.
6. Employer-Sponsored DAF Accounts
Employer-Sponsored DAF Accounts enable employees to make payroll deductions for charitable giving. Remember to check with your employer to see if this option is available.
We recommend that you consult your tax advisor to discuss your unique financial picture, as recent tax law changes through OBBB, H.R.1 may affect your charitable giving.
Thank you for considering the Hertz Foundation among your philanthropic priorities. Generous donors like you fuel the work and collaborations of our Hertz Fellows. If you have questions or want to discuss special circumstances regarding your gift, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
